We had to remove more than half the walkway to make access for backhoes and other equipment needed to stabilize the fireplace and rebuild the foundation.
As removing and replacing the roof was not a viable option, we built temporary supports that we hoped would carry the snow load and span a gap wide and high enough to allow equipment access.
At one end, the support arch was propped on an old square post leaning against the stone column. At the other end, a birds mouth cut rested over a square block pressed against the foot of a roof support post.
Not exactly advanced engineering, but it proved stable enough.
