While granite bedrock is near the surface in some places, there is clearly a deep layer of sand here. Between the jack posts, the end of the remaining stone foundation is visible resting on the deep bed of damp sand.
No wonder the foundation was shifting!
Apparently the guys with the little diggers decided not to disturb the large boulder at the edge of the excavation.
